Stand Studies, 2025-2015
In his ongoing series, Quiet Guardians, Robert explores the beach stand not merely as an architectural object, but as a vessel of memory—personal, cultural, and geographic. These weathered structures, often overlooked outside the summer glare, become quiet monuments: emblems of order, guardianship, and coastal rhythm. Growing up along the Eastern seaboard, he was drawn to their presence—each stand unique in form, yet unified in function —each piece distills the essence of stillness. Through the language of painted paper and collage, Roth pares each form down to its geometric core, allowing the architecture to emerge as both subject and symbol. Removed from the bustle of beachgoers, these structures are reimagined as solitary “portraits”—each one reflecting not just place, but time and psyche. This body of work acts as a kind of visual archaeology—excavating fragments of memory and translating them through a modernist lens. At its heart, this is a homage: to coastal culture, and nostalgia. These stands, stripped to their bones, whisper stories that continue to shape our sense of place.
