Stand Studies, 2024
Roth explores the emotional architecture of remembered places — small, vernacular structures that hold traces of personal and collective memory. These modest dwellings, drawn from the shorelines of his youth, become studies in structure, atmosphere, and absence. Through subtle abstraction, he distills their geometry to essential form, allowing each to stand as both object and quiet witness. These vernacular buildings — once animated by summer crowds, appear suspended in stillness. Emptied of activity, their frameworks emerge with heightened clarity. Stripped by weather and time, they reveal their underlying bones. “Growing up on the shores of eastern Long Island, I was drawn to these small structures. They felt alive in the summer, yet in winter they seemed forgotten, settled into dormancy — pared down to their simplest state. In that exposure, I began to see their true presence.” Working through painted paper and collage, Roth constructs what he describes as “portraits” of these spaces — measured compositions that balance geometry and memory. The works function as quiet documents of transitory gathering places, each structure carrying the residue of lived experience.
“I’m interested in how these simple buildings hold memory — tiny gems that whisper from childhood.
